Houseplants are great choices for several reasons. First, they obviously provide a beautiful view. A gorgeous houseplant can help in relaxation and in alleviating stress. In fact, houseplants can even decrease fatigue. Second, houseplants purify the air. In a process known as photosynthesis, plants take carbon dioxide, a waste product of breathing, and replace it with oxygen. In addition, houseplants can decrease toxins that are in the air, making it easier to breathe whether or not one has respiratory problems. This makes plants quite helpful in sleeping areas. Third, houseplants act as natural humidifiers as they release water vapor from their leaves. This is especially helpful for those who live in dry northern climates.
There are literally scores of choices when it comesto houseplants. Making the best choice will depend on one’s climate and the amount of time the individual has to take care of the plant. Low-maintenance houseplants are perfect for people who do not have time to water frequently or who do not have any windows that would allow the plant to be in direct sunlight. Ivy, philodendron, spider plants, rubber trees, ponytail palms and ferns are examples of low maintenance houseplants. Many houseplants simply bear leaves; however, some also flower. Examples of these include the popular African violet, the amaryllis and the Christmas cactus. Cactuses are often fun choices because they do not require frequent watering. Whatever one’s specific choice of plant maybe, a houseplant is always a great investment in beauty and relaxation.
